Most of us use AI as a digital assistant for writing emails or checking facts, but behind the scenes, tech companies are building specialized versions of these tools that can act more like a laboratory assistant than a chatbot.
Anthropic, a prominent AI research company, recently unveiled Claude Science, a software product specifically designed to help scientists perform complex research tasks. Much like a junior researcher, this tool follows high-level instructions to execute experiments or analyze data independently. Meanwhile, the U.S. government has flip-flopped on policy, officially lifting export controls—regulations that previously prevented people living outside the U.S. from using Anthropic’s most capable versions of AI, known as Mythos and Fable.
Moving from chatbots to autonomous assistants
When you talk to a standard AI, it focuses on predicting the next word in a sentence based on the patterns it learned during its creation. This "training" process is like teaching an intern by showing them millions of examples of how professional documents look until they can mimic that style perfectly. To make a tool like Claude Science more capable, the company allows the AI to use "agency"—meaning it can move beyond simply writing text and actually go out and use other computer programs on its own, like opening a spreadsheet to calculate data or launching a search to find a reference. When we say an AI has "access" to data, it means it has been given a digital bridge to interact with real-world files and databases, rather than just relying on the information it already has stored in its head.
The reversal of government restrictions suggests that policymakers are still figuring out how to balance national security with the desire to let companies grow. For the average person, this is a reminder that AI is rapidly moving past the "fun parlor trick" phase. As these tools become capable of doing professional-grade scientific work, the question is no longer just what AI can say, but what it can actually accomplish in the real world. If AI becomes an essential partner in drug discovery or biotech, the rules governing who can access these tools will eventually shape who gets to make the next big medical breakthrough.
