How Waze is using AI to make driving feel more natural

You might soon find yourself chatting with your navigation app as if you were talking to a passenger sitting in the seat next to you, rather than tapping through a series of menus. Waze is starting to incorporate more conversational intelligence into its interface to help manage your drive.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Waze is integrating Gemini, the same advanced artificial intelligence behind Google's primary digital assistant, to handle voice commands more naturally. Previously, voice-controlled navigation often required you to use very specific, rigid phrases. With this update, you can simply speak in sentences to report road hazards like construction, closures, or incorrect street numbers. You can also ask for recommendations, such as finding a coffee shop that is currently open or spotting a gas station with the lowest price. Beyond these updates, Waze is also adding a mode for motorcyclists to account for routes specific to two-wheeled vehicles and an option to make the app less talkative so it does not constantly interrupt your music or podcasts.

HOW IT WORKS

To understand how this change works, it helps to think of traditional voice commands like a very basic light switch. In the past, the app could only turn on a feature if you hit the exactly right switch, like saying a precise phrase in a specific order. If you deviated slightly, the app would get confused. Gemini acts more like a skilled translator. It uses a large language model, which is a computer system trained on massive amounts of written and spoken human communication to predict and understand the meaning behind intent. When you speak to the app now, this system analyzes your words to pinpoint what you actually want to achieve, rather than looking for a specific button-press command. It interprets the context behind your request, allowing for a fluid, back-and-forth interaction that feels less like programming a machine and more like asking a human for help.

WHY IT MATTERS

Navigation apps are essentially trying to solve the problem of information overload. We want the benefits of a smart assistant, but we also want the simplicity of just driving. By moving toward conversational AI, these apps are attempting to lower the barrier between the driver and the data. The goal is to make the technology fade into the background so you can keep your eyes on the road.
