The US government recently placed export-control restrictions on Anthropic’s most advanced models, specifically Fable and Mythos, citing national security concerns. A group of cybersecurity veterans is now challenging that decision, warning that the policy creates a significant vulnerability for the very systems it aims to protect.
The trade-off between control and defense
The restrictions effectively limit who can access these models outside of certain jurisdictions, treating them as sensitive software assets. Cybersecurity experts rely on these powerful AI systems to act as automated auditors that can scan codebases for hidden security flaws. Because these models can read and generate code at scale, they help defenders find entry points for attackers before a malicious actor does.
These AI models function like high-speed digital locksmiths. While a human might take weeks to audit a complex software architecture for a single weak lock, these models can examine the entire building’s security profile in minutes. By restricting their use, the government is essentially forcing defenders to work with slower, less capable tools while the threats themselves continue to evolve at digital speeds.
For a security professional managing critical infrastructure, this creates an uncomfortable gap between the tools they have and the threats they face. The government is attempting to limit the proliferation of high-level AI capabilities to foreign adversaries, but the side effect is a quieter, less equipped domestic defense.
