While most of the initial boom in AI technology has favored firms that create complex chips—the specialized processors that do the actual work of 'thinking'—investors are now pivoting to the companies that supply the memory those chips require. Micron, which manufactures the memory hardware that acts as a digital pantry for high-powered computers, is being viewed as one of the few publicly traded companies uniquely positioned to profit from the massive demand for AI infrastructure.
The traffic jam inside the chip
Think of an AI model as a professional chef. The processor—the part of the computer that does the math—is the chef's brain, capable of incredibly fast logic. However, even the best chef cannot cook if they have to walk to a basement freezer every time they need an ingredient; if the processor has to wait for data, the entire system slows to a crawl. AI, however, needs thousands of 'ingredients' per second to function. The hardware Micron builds uses specialized channels that allow data to flow in massive, parallel streams—thousands of lanes wide—directly into the processor. This is fundamentally different from standard memory, which uses much narrower paths that act like a bottleneck. By creating these ultra-wide 'high-bandwidth' pipes, they ensure the the system doesn't starve for information, keeping the processor running at top speed.
The surge in interest toward Micron suggests that investors realize AI is not just about raw computing power, but about the entire supply chain required to sustain it. We are moving past the 'first look' phase of the AI boom, where only the most obvious players gained attention, into a 'second look' phase where every bottleneck in the hardware pipeline becomes an opportunity. This shift highlights a simple, overlooked reality: even the smartest artificial intelligence is only as fast as the speed at which it can grab its data.
