Why is OpenAI making a desktop keyboard?

OpenAI is dipping into the hardware market with a niche $230 keyboard gadget. OpenAI, the team best known for the software behind ChatGPT, just launched its first piece of physical hardware. It is a $230 desktop keyboard designed specifically for people who manage AI coding assistants. This new device, called the Codex Micro, is a small, specialized keypad meant to sit alongside your computer, offering a tactile way to control automated programs that write code.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

OpenAI collaborated with a boutique hardware designer called Work Louder to create this device. It features mechanical buttons, a joystick, and a dial. Each key is lit to signal the current status of an AI agent—the autonomous bots that handle coding tasks for a user. One of the more interesting features is a dial that lets you control the agent's reasoning level. You can think of this as a way to adjust how much time or computational power the AI should dedicate to a specific job. If you are having it generate a simple snippet of text, you might dial the power down to keep things fast, but for complex, multi-step coding projects, you can crank the dial up to give the AI more thinking room. While this looks like an attempt to build a new tool for power users, the company says it is a limited-run project, clearly serving more as a statement about its interest in hardware than a move to dominate the desk accessory market.

The mystery speaker

Beyond this keyboard, there are reports that OpenAI has much larger hardware ambitions. The company is allegedly developing a portable, screenless smart speaker that integrates directly with ChatGPT. Unlike a traditional speaker, this device is rumored to use a camera and various sensors to understand the user's physical environment. Reports even suggest it will include mechanical parts that move on their own, intended to make the experience feel more human-like. This is supposedly in development for a 2027 release, potentially as the first of several hardware products currently being designed with the help of former Apple talent.

HOW IT WORKS

When we talk about the reasoning level of an AI, we are essentially talking about the intensity of the math happening behind the curtain. When an AI receives a prompt, it does not just act; it performs a complex series of calculations to predict the next word or step. Adjusting the reasoning level—like the dial does on the Micro—tells the underlying system to either take the quickest, most direct path or to perform much more intensive, multi-step checking before delivering an answer. The keyboard acts as a physical interface for these invisible software choices. By connecting to your computer, it sends commands back to the AI software, effectively serving as a remote control for your digital labor force. This moves management away from clicking around a mouse on a screen and into physical switches that keep you informed on whether your code is running, finishing, or hitting a snag.

WHY IT MATTERS

This launch is happening under a cloud of controversy. Apple has sued OpenAI, alleging that the company’s recent jump into hardware was fueled by stolen trade secrets and poached employees. OpenAI has publicly denied these claims. For most of us, this is a sign that AI is looking to escape the screen. Whether it is through a specialized keyboard or a smart speaker that observes the room, these companies are betting that we want to interact with AI in the physical world. The question is whether these gadgets will actually make us more efficient, or if they are simply interesting experiments in how we communicate with our own tools.
